How to Pair Cigars and Drinks ?
Basic Rules
Before exploring some specific pairings, let’s try to lay out a few basic rules to pair your drinks and cigars:
- Complementary pairing: Here you aim at matching the intensity between the cigar and the drink. You’ll pair a full-bodied cigar with a strong, bold drink. And a lighter cigar with lighter beverages.
- Clashing pairing: You aim to contrast the flavors or the intensity of your cigar and drink to create an experience. For example a lighter cigar could bring out the notes of a bold whisky. Conversely, a light or refreshing drink could give enough space for the tobacco leaf aromas to develop in a unique fashion.
- Consider Personal Taste: The most important rule of all. Ultimately, pairing cigars and drinks comes down to personal preference. Enjoying a cigar is literally your moment. A time to clear your head from the mental fog, to decompress. So it only comes down to what you like. So do not hesitate to experiment, the possible pairings are numerous. Experimentation can lead to discovering unexpected yet delightful combinations. It’ll become your signature style.
- Avoid Processed Drink: This is more one of my personal rule in cigars and drinks pairing. Of course you could enjoy your moment while drinking a cola. However I find it unfortunate – and somewhat disrespectful – to pair a cigar, which is the result of artisanal craftsmanship and raw, natural materials, with a mass-produced beverage filled with artificial flavors and chemical additives. A cigar embodies tradition, patience, and authenticity, while such drinks often represent the exact opposite: synthetic, rushed, and detached from any real connection to the ingredients.
Classic Cigars and Drinks Pairing

Cigars and Whiskey
Whiskey, as Scotch and Bourbon, is probably the most classic pairing for cigars. The rich taste of Scotch enhances the bold, spicy, and chocolatey notes of full-bodied cigars like Maduro. Bourbon, sweeter and smoother, highlights caramel and vanilla undertones, making it ideal for medium-bodied cigars.
A pairing to try: Pair a Cohiba Maduro cigar with a smoky Lagavulin Scotch.
Cigars and Rum
Originating from the same regions as cigars, rum is obviously a natural drink to pair with your cigar. Rum’s sweetness effortlessly complements the inherent flavors of cigars. Aged dark rums, rich in caramel and spices, naturally enhance medium to full-bodied cigars by accentuating their sweeter and spicier nuances.
A pairing to try: Combine a Montecristo cigar with Zacapa XO Rum.
Cigars and Cognac
“Ah un bon Cognac”. This drink from my country, characterized by fruity, floral, and slightly spicy notes, is ideal for pairing with medium-bodied cigars. Its smoothness create a really enjoyable experience, gently enhancing the cigar’s earthy and spicy flavors without overwhelming them.
A pairing to try: Pair a Davidoff Signature Toro cigar with a Rémy Martin XO Cognac. It is one of my go to pairing.
Cigars and Wine
It is less conventional, and almost never depicted in movies and ads, but pairing cigars with wine can yield surprisingly delightful results. Just like cigars, wine comes from a variety of terroirs. Pairing them together allows for the creation of exquisite combinations.
A pairing to try: Experience a delightful combination by pairing a Romeo y Julieta cigar with an Argentine Malbec. Or try a light white wine with a medium to strong Davidoff. Following the “clashing pairing” rule.
Cigars and Coffee
Coffee is another exceptional partner for cigars, particularly when enjoyed after a meal or during the afternoon break. A bold espresso or rich Americano can bring out the subtle sweetness and spice of medium-to-full-bodied cigars, while lighter cigars pair perfectly with cappuccinos or lattes.
A pairing to try: Try pairing a Padron 1964 Anniversary Series cigar with a freshly brewed espresso. Or a Toro size cigar with your lungo.
Additional Cigars and Drinks Pairings

Cigars and Craft Beers
Craft beers are interesting pairing option for cigars. You can easily apply the complementary and the clashy pairing rule. Especially considering that beer is usually more familiar to most people than spirits are. Lighter ales or IPAs might enhance mild to medium-bodied cigars for example. But also because the variety of beers also are almost endless now.
A pairing to try: Enjoy an Arturo Fuente Opus X cigar with a creamy stout for a bold and relaxing experience.
Cigars and Tequila
High-quality, aged tequila, especially the extra añejo varieties, offers a fascinating pairing for cigars. Its caramelized, spicy flavors blend seamlessly with medium-to-full-bodied cigars, creating an adventurous and vibrant tasting experience.
A pairing to try: Pair a Partagas Serie D No. 4 with a smooth, rich extra añejo tequila.
Cigars and Chocolate
Pairing cigars with chocolate offers a luxurious sensory experience. Dark chocolate, rich with bold cocoa notes, complements full-bodied cigars, enhancing their complex layers of spice, earthiness, and subtle sweetness. Conversely, a smooth milk chocolate beautifully highlights the creamy, nutty notes of milder cigars. For an exquisite treat, savor a Maduro cigar with premium dark chocolate—each puff harmonizing with the indulgent intensity of cocoa.
My Signature Cigar and Drink Pairing
A Cognac Espresso Martini with a Davidoff Signature Toro.
Probably the cigar and drink combination I enjoy the most. Along with just a cigar and a coffee.
A Cognac Espresso Martini is simply an Expresso Martini where the Vodka was changed by Cognac.
It allows you to relax and at the same time the expresso while give you a boost of energy to keep you going through the night. As a bonus, the Espresso Martini is also one of the lower-calorie cocktails you can enjoy.

My signature pairing: An expresso martini (with Cognac) along with a Davidoff Signature
